As part of the commemorations on Monday evening, the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Harare in conjunction with Bob Mutumbi marks the 75th anniversary of Al-Nakba Day through a drama called “Chindunduma” at Jason Mpepho Little Theatre.
A remembrance of the catastrophe that happened some seventy-five years ago in the land of Palestine and the drama “Chindunduma” is a must-watch for those keen to learn Palestinian history and its struggle against Israeli apartheid.
The cast of Michael Kudakwashe, Charmaine Mujeri, and Rayne Chiramba did a splendid job of bringing to life the grief of the Palestinians on the occupation of their land by the Israelites.
The touching play “Chindunduma” is based on the 75th commemoration of the Al Nakba and portrayed the grief of the Palestine people under the Israeli apartheid regime.
Nakba Day is the day for the commemoration of the Palestinian Catastrophe, which comprised the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland in 1948, and the permanent displacement of a majority of the Palestinian people.
It is generally commemorated on 15 May, the Gregorian calendar date of the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948. For Palestinians, it is an annual day of commemoration of the displacement that preceded and followed Israel’s establishment.
The day was officially inaugurated by Yasser Arafat in 1998, though the date had been unofficially used for protests since as early as 1949.
In his opening remarks, the Palestinian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Tamer Almassri could not hide his admiration for the talented cast for doing their best in revealing the atrocities his fellow countrymen suffered at the hands of Israel.
“Since we have realised all the evil machinations by the Israeli government. There is a need to boycott buying goods from Israel. Let’s shun using its airport. We just have to boycott everything from Israel,” Ambassador Almassri explained.
The 45-minute play provoked debates on the complicity of the international community particularly the United Nations in condemning the Israeli security forces for the atrocities on Palestinian citizens.
Nakba Day is commemorated annually. More than 700,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled from their homes and more than 400 Palestinian villages were destroyed in the events surrounding the establishment of Israel.
Meanwhile, the UN commemorated Nakba Day, which marks the creation of the state of Israel in historical Palestine, for the first time in 2023.
