Few women hold leadership positions in media, GMC

State of the media Freedom for Women study done by Gender and Media Connect executive director Patience Zirima established that very few women own media organisations in Zimbabwe and they are very few women occupying leadership positions in the media houses.

This was revealed at the FNF gender media conference 2023, running under the theme Breaking the Glass Ceiling currently underway at Cresta Lodge in Harare.

Sexual harassment of women by colleagues in newsrooms has also been reported to be very high.

In a 2021 study by GMC, 73% of respondents noted that the media sector is very hostile to female journalists, with a culture that is abusive and language that is suggestive.

In attendance at the FNF gender media conference is Zimbabwe Union of Journalists Secretary General Perfect Hlongwane, Harare deputy mayor Kudzai Kadzombe, some members of parliament , Zimbabwe Media Commissioner Dr Susan Makore and FNF Womentorship program mentors.
