Israel escalates aggression on refugee camps in the West Bank

By Wallace Mawire

Palestinian ambassador to Zimbabwe, Tamer Almassri, has strongly condemned the ongoing Israeli military aggression against Palestinian refugee camps and towns in the West Bank, which has entered its 14th consecutive day, killing over 25 Palestinians and leaving dozens injured and detained.

He said the attacks, concentrated in Jenin camp, Al-Far’a camp, Tulkarm camp, and the town of Tamoun, south of Tubas, represent a grave escalation of violence and a blatant disregard for international law by the Israeli forces.

He added that the scale of destruction is immense, with dozens of homes demolished or blown up by fighter jets, displacing over 15,000 innocent Palestinians, especially in Jenin camp.

The ambassador said that the Israeli military is preventing the displaced families from returning to their homes with a clear intent of ethnic cleansing and a systematic act of genocide as it did in Gaza.

He said that the Israeli forces have also besieged the Martyr Thabet Thabet Governmental Hospital and the Israa Specialized Hospital, obstructing the vital work of ambulances and medical crews are being subjected to searches and field investigations, while surrounding buildings are being used as military outposts and sniper locations, further endangering civilians.

The state of Palestine has demanded an emergency and urgent session of the International Security Council, to stop the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people and called on the international community to take immediate action to demand an immediate cessation of Israeli military aggression against Palestinian civilians and hold Israel accountable for its violations of international humanitarian law.

He added that the international community must not stand idly by while Israel continues its systematic campaign of violence and displacement against the Palestinian people, adding that the time for decisive action is now.

This Sunday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appealed for an emergency session of the UN Security Council to stop Israel’s attacks against Palestinians following the demolition of residential blocks in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern occupied West Bank.
