Government Empowers Extension Officers with Digital Tablets

Last Friday, in Mashonaland West province, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Deputy Minister Honourable Vangelis Haritatos handed over 714 digital tablets, being part of the 6,000 donated by President Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa to extension officers in the country.

This initiative underscores the importance of digitisation in the agricultural sector.

The distribution of digital tablets emphasized government’s commitment to transforming the agricultural sector. The government intends to distribute 6,000 digital tablets nationwide, with a focus on ensuring that no region is left behind.

“We believe the capacitation of extension workers will go a long way in ensuring that farmers benefit from timely, well-researched information informed by enhanced communication channels between the ministry and its ground forces,” Minister Haritatos stated.

The newly distributed gadgets are expected to revolutionize data collection, storage, and communication systems for extension officers tasked with supporting farmers.

An Agritex officer expressed optimism about the new tools, stating the challenges of manual data entry, “It is tiresome and fraught with risks, especially during the rainy season. Papers can get lost, burnt, or soaked, so this is a welcome development.”

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Professor Obert Jiri, was also part of the handover ceremony updated the farmers on the successful containment of the African armyworm, urging them to continue actively scouting for pests in their fields. He also encouraged them to take note of climate changes and plant other food crops such as sweet potatoes for food security and sugar beans for their nutritional benefits.
