Outbreak of Undiagnosed Disease in Panzi, Democratic Republic of the Congo

The World Health Organisation has informed of an undiagnosed disease in Panzi, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

An outbreak of an undiagnosed disease has occurred in Panzi, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Cases were noted between October 24 and December 5, 2024.
There have been 406 reported cases and 31 deaths.
Symptoms include fever, headache, cough, runny nose, and body ache. The majority of cases (64.3%) are among children aged 0-14 years. Malnutrition is a contributing factor, with all severe cases reported to be malnourished.
Rapid response teams have been deployed to identify the cause of the outbreak and strengthen the response.
Samples have been sent to the laboratory and are expected on Monday.
Laboratory tests are underway to determine the exact cause.
The area is rural and remote, with limited access to diagnostics and quality case management. With the ongoing rains, it can take 48 hours to reach Kinshasa by road. The ongoing rainy season has further hindered access.
