By Learnmore Nyoni

As many’s economic conditions improve, so does their consumption of processed and fast foods. These processed foods and drinks are easily accessible, cheap, tastier, have better-looking colours and have a longer shelf life.

Processed foods; are any agricultural products that have gone through a process that alters their original state, using additives such as preservatives, flavours, colour, spices, salt, sugars and fats.

Processed foods are the chief culprits behind medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.

Conversely, the body requires high-fibre fruits, legumes, nuts, vegetables and whole grains to maintain a healthy balance and better immunity.

The World Health Organisation encourages a daily dietary intake that limits the consumption of fat, salt and sugar.
