LEAD party leader, Linda Tsungirira Masirira, has called on the government to formulate policies that support the girl child to reach their full potential.
In commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child held under the theme, ‘Our time is now our rights are our future’, Masarira said her party is pushing for the formulation of girl-friendly policies in the country.
“We are now working on bringing into the fold these issues. Government to have girl-friendly policies and generate more opportunities for them to have their voices heard.
“On the 3rd of October, we launched a #MyStoryMyStrength program aimed at encouraging the girl child to speak out.
“I started by telling my own life story to inspire the girl child facing difficulties. So that they know, they are not alone.
“To overcome whatever they are facing, girls have to speak out and never be limited by their situation. Girls should be involved by sharing their stories, blogs and videos of girl change makers.
“LEAD continues to inspire the girl child to be influencers and the face of change,” she said.
Masarira called for parents and guardians to support the girl child so as to unlock the girls’ full potential in society.
“It is vital for parents and guardians to start changing societal expectations of the girl child and start equipping her to be able to unleash the best version of herself without fear of being stereotyped.
“As a country, we need to collectively address the factors that are holding girls back and urge government and policymakers to make more targeted investments,” she said.
Furthermore, Masarira chronicled the challenges that girls are facing in the country because of the dominance of men, which is hindering them from achieving their dreams.
