Young people under the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Kwekwe chapter last week collaborated with the Kwekwe golf club for a golf fundraising tournament to assist underprivileged girls in the mining city.
Speaking to Impact Stories Zimbabwe, the executive vice president of JCI Sheunesu Mangwende said the initiative is meant to support economically disadvantaged girls in Kwekwe.
“We are collaborating with Kwekwe golf club for a tournament which we are hosting under the theme, ‘pad her up’
“This initiative is meant to raise funds to buy sanitary wear for the underprivileged girls in Kwekwe .
“We conducted a survey and we realized that girls are really facing some challenges in acquiring sanitary pads such that they end up resorting to some unsafe means.
“This is something we look forward to doing annually because menstrual issues are not a once-off thing so we want to give continuous support,” he said.
Mangwende further called for a collaborative effort from different stakeholders and individuals in the society to also chip in and support the girls in order to protect them.
“We are calling for corporates, individuals and many other stakeholders to collaborate and take up this initiative to support and protect our girls in the society.
” One would realise that condoms are given for free but pads are sold so it’s really a challenge, ” he added.
The initiative was supported by SPAR and Techno mobile company which awarded the best players of the tournament.
